A Dangerous game against drug-resistant bacteria

by Carina March 18, 2020
written by Carina

In the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic (CoVid-19) I wanted to bring back an old post related to bacteria and the dangers we face to heal the sick that may actually be aiding in the evolution of the bacteria we are trying to get rid of. This post was based on the TED talk “What do we do when antibiotics don’t work anymore?” back in 2015.

5 First-Time Homebuyer Mistakes

by Carina March 15, 2020
written by Carina

The Mr. and I are in the works to finding our first home for The Green Hearth Project – together. Truth be told, I’m already a first-time homebuyer, but when the opportunity for me to move to Chicago came, I had to leave my one year old milestone back in the desert.

That being said, when I was looking for my true first-home back in 2013, I wasn’t actually searching for a home, I was really just looking for a place to rent with a friend, and somehow ended up one night, sick with a cold (runny nose and everything) hugging the notary because I was officially a home owner! Looking back on it, I don’t regret my decisions, but boy, I have learned a lot and don’t plan to make some of the same mistakes I did back then.

Material Naming Convention for Images

by Carina February 10, 2020
written by Carina

One of the things I like are standards – especially when it comes to BIM. One particular area that I feel doesn’t get enough notice and care for is the area of materiality. As our industry advances in technology and visualizations, we are seeing more firms utilizing tools for more impressive renderings, virtual walkthroughs, and even VR experiences. However, we seem to lack some simple organization across the board in keeping a library of these materials straight.

This post will share a methodology in naming your image file for rendering, keeping all of the data associated with the material linked in its name so any person has an understanding of its makeup.

2020 Resolutions

by Carina January 31, 2020
written by Carina

Every year it seems like we can’t get past the tradition of setting goals for ourselves. And I am no exception.

However, this year I have decided to not only think of myself and my personal goals but how I can better The Green Hearth.

Initially, I wanted to have 1 goal. One single item I could focus all my efforts on for the year so I could truly make progress. The truth is, there seemed to be one other thing on my mind I felt necessary to make 2020 an amazing year!

2020 Garden Introduction

by Carina January 27, 2020
written by Carina

It’s a new year, new home location, and a new garden to work with! This season, I have decided to take a small south-facing garden (with a rather unusual shape) to plant some food-producing options in our raised garden.

5 techniques on how to use “Form” in your home

by Carina September 9, 2019
written by Carina

One of the most basic Elements of Design is form. Form is made up of points, lines, planes, volumes, and shapes; these then become the starting point to your design. When looking for a new home, or remodeling your current one, the form is one of the most important aspects to consider, but, can be manipulated through design and decoration.

You learn something new: Elements of Design

by Carina September 5, 2019
written by Carina

I am a learner. No, really. According to the Strengths Finder test, my top strength is being a Learner which means I enjoy the journey of understanding new things. With that in mind, and in the spirit of school-time starting back up, I thought: what better way to start the new school year, than to bring home a topic that every designer should know: Design Theory!

And that is where “You Learn Something New: Elements of Design in Your Home” came into action. I wanted to dedicate this month to learning all of the different Elements of Design (form, scale, color, texture, pattern, light) and how to bring them in your home design. So get ready, this month is going to be fun!
